Britney Spears: The Princess of Pop and the Queen of the Comeback
My first ever concert was Spear’s 1998 tour with N’SYNC at the Cleveland State Convocation Center. I think Maroon 5 opened for them, with a stool in the middle of a large stage and an acoustic guitar.
Then Britney came out. Britney made it rain -literal liquid rain- on stage, danced in her underwear and had a SNAKE around her neck. I was just a few weeks shy of my 7th birthday. I might even go so far as to say that concert is one of my first memories. I don’t even know if we stayed for N’SYNC, considering I went with my dad and 4 year old sister, (we probably didn’t) but it didn’t matter. I saw Britney Spears in person. I got to go to school the next day and tell all my friends that she was a real person, not just a person on MTV or a 2D poster on my brother’s wall.
Britney Spears is an irrefutable, inescapable brand - an instantly recognizable sound, a sweet southern drawl and an all american comeback story but - most importantly- she’s one of us. Sliding in just under the cut for ‘Millennial”, Britney is an unwavering reminder of 90’s nostalgia, early ‘aughts (questionable) iconic fashion and prevailing Billboard topping artist nearly a decade and a half since her first nasally croon in a recording studio.
Britney Spears is so ingrained into our childhood, teen-years and now early adulthood that we’re willing to give her all the second chances she wants, we don’t care who she’s married to, if she’s bald or if Madonna indoctrinated her into the illuminati at the MTV music awards.
With more and more young people practically ripping apart the internet searching for individuality, Spear’s music has been given a pass. But I don’t think it’s as simple as chalking Spear’s perpetual “Comeback” status as a fluke, I think her carefully documented rollercoaster of her life has created a unique cocktail for success in nearly any modern era.
Everyone loves an underdog and Spears has proven herself as more than a trainwreck we can’t stop watching, she’s a tireless champion we can’t stop rooting for (even if you pretend you don’t care). Her music tightropes the borders of kitschy, cheesy and genius in a way no other pop artist has been able to do.
I’ll see you in Vegas, Britney!
